It is recommended to perform a factory reset on a fridge before assessing for fault, as altered fridge settings outside the scope of what is covered in the manual may lead to a variety of issues.
How to perform a factory reset for plastic-case portable fridges (except GH2100/GH2102/GH2106):
- Plug the fridge to power
- Press the power button to turn off the fridge (display should be blank/off)
- Press & hold the set button (the "gear") until the display shows E1.
- Let go of the set button
- Press & hold + and – together until the display lights up & shows -188 (or 888 or 000)
- Let go of the + and – buttons
- Press the power button to restart
See this video on how to do this: https://bmc.worldmanager.com/go/WNPWs1
If your fridge has a divider, make sure the divider is inserted, with the small plastic plug located at the bottom of the fridge, as this contains a magnet that controls how the zones work.
The fridge should then be left on for a minimum of 5 minutes to allow the compressor time to start up before troubleshooting can begin.
How to perform a factory reset the Stainless Steel portable fridges (e.g. GH1646):
- Press the power button to turn off the unit.
- Press + Hold the 'Compressor Speed' button until 888 appears on the temp displays.
- Press the power button to finalise.
- All temps and settings will be set back to default.
Brass Monkey Fridge diagnostic error codes
Error | Fault | Common Fix |
F1 | Battery protection mode | There are 3 levels of battery protection. The default is H(igh) and offers the best protection, however, may cause issues when running from a battery or vehicle using a long lead. To adjust the protection mode, press Set for 3 seconds, screen flashes H. If error code F1, set to M(edium) or L(ow). |
F2 | Fan overload protection mode | Switch it off for 30 minutes to allow the system to cool down. Please ensure there is adequate ventilation around the fan vents. |
F3 | Compressor frequent start protection mode | Switch it off for 30 minutes to allow the compressor to cool down. Ensure the fridge is stored out of direct sunlight in a cool area. Turn it on so the compressor runs. Tilt it left and right briefly to redistribute the working fluids. Then set it level. Make sure the vents are not covered by nearby obstructions and air can flow into and out of the vents. |
F4 | Compressor is overloaded mode
F5 | Compressor high temperature protection mode
F6 | Controller detection error | Switch off and then on again after a minute. If issue persists a connection may be loose due to vibration or a manufacturing issue. |
F7 | Temperature sensor error | faulty sensor terminal, refer instructions. |
F8 |
Common issues and solutions
Not Powering On
The compressors have up to a 3-minute start-up delay after power on. Ensure the fridge is connected to a stable power supply for at least 5 minutes before use / testing.
DC power may be insufficient. Try an alternate DC source, eg. another vehicle, battery, or power supply.
The AC adaptor or DC lead may be faulty. Test with a known working adaptor or lead.
The fridge may be set to Eco mode and cooling slowly. If in Eco mode, switch to Max for faster cooling. Max is the factory default and ideal for AC power. Eco is only designed for sub-15°C ambient temperatures where battery availability is minimal. Max is recommended for almost all use cases in Australia / New Zealand.
Not Cooling
Fixed models have a freezer side (smaller compartment) and a fridge side.
These compartments cannot be swapped.
Ensure at least a 5°C temperature differential between these compartments.
For models with a removable divider, ensure it is properly installed when using dual-zone operation.
If the divider is removed, only one temperature will be displayed.
Before removing the divider for single zone use, ensure both zones are active.
It is recommended to only insert or remove the divider while the fridge is powered off.
Not Freezing
Is the freezer zone turned off? Temp display will show 3 dashes if the zone is turned off.
To turn On / Off: Hold + and set for 3 seconds for fridge / Hold – and set for 3 seconds for freezer.
It is not possible to set the fridge zone temperature lower than freezer zone; maintain a 5°C differential.
Noisy fan / Motor
Remove the ventilation cover and use a soft brush to clean any blockages, dust, etc...
The sound of water flowing is normal.
Do not tip Fridge upside down.
Incorrect / Fluctuating Temperature
The set temperature is an average, with normal fluctuations as the compressor cycles.
Large volumes of unchilled food items will cause further temperature fluctuations.
Confirm that the temperature is reading Celsius and not Fahrenheit.
To adjust: Power off the fridge, press and hold the set button until E1 appears on the display. Press the set button until the display shows E5. Then press either plus or minus button (if it's a model without a plus or minus button then press either the arrow up or arrow down buttons) to choose which temperature unit, either "F" or "C”.
Water Condensation
Water drops around the lid seal is normal condensation. Wipe away.
Excessive condensation may indicate a fault with the lid / door / seal, inspect for damage / warping.
Exterior of fridge condensation is normal in high humidity conditions. Wipe away, or consider a cover
